Eventually, after trying a number of other ploys, I turned off Zone Alarm, and access was restored. Just like that. No reboot, no restart of Tbird. The copy of Zone Alarm on that machine expired about 3 months ago. A simple solution for what at first looked like a major problem. -- wolf k. This time, I bit the bullet, went into safe mode, and uninstalled and completely eliminated all traces of the ISP access software. Also traces of a few other programs that had been uninstalled. Rebooted, reinstalled the ISP software, and now everything works just fine. I'm not at all sure just what cured the beast. But don't look a gift horse in the mouth... ;-) HTH -- wolf k.
