I just installed this program.

When I open a few windows in my browser, everything slows to a crawl.

I assume this is due to a larger footprint?

Any suggestions? Should I disable some features?

Or should I switch to a different free program (is there one that's better
and won't slow things down?)

Interesting.

It slowed down again and using task manager I see 99% of the CPU is taken up
with avgrsc.exe

Just disable the link scan part.
See if that doesn't pep it up back to normal.

I have uninstalled AVG 8 and my usage is down around 15%. But, every
once in awhile the avgrsx comes back and runs my cpu to 100%. This is
after it has been uninstalled, so I don't know what is going on. F-
prot and Trend don't find anything and spybot killed spyhunter 2 days
ago so now I am running at 5% cpu if avgrsx doesn't run.

Is AVG working on fixing this? I have been an avid AVG user and
promoter until the last couple of versions which have not worked well
for me.

It would appear that you have not uninstalled AVG properly,
particularly since you point out that one of its components is
still resident and using up system resources. Did you reboot
after the uninstallation?

Rg> F- prot and Trend don't find anything and spybot killed
Rg> spyhunter 2 days ago so now I am running at 5% cpu if
Rg> avgrsx doesn't run.

Perhaps you should consider running a good registry scanner
(something like UniBlue's Registry Booster 2.) See if there are
faults in the registry that are fouling you up.

Rg> Is AVG working on fixing this? I have been an avid AVG user
Rg> and promoter until the last couple of versions which have
Rg> not worked well for me.

I've been using AVG (mostly the Pro (paid) version) for years
now. I was running V7.5 Internet Security and upgraded to V8...
Admittedly the results have been somewhat less than spectacular.
A real "pretty" but substantially dysfunctional user interface
has taken the place of the simple, efficient one that v7.5
utilised. Very disappointing to say the least. But I keep
sending them feedback; hopefully enough of the paid users are
doing the same and they'll do something about the new version's
shortcomings. It does do a good job of detecting various types
of malware; just not as easy to "talk" to as the prior versions.

I digress; re-check your system. Make sure that the \Program
Files\AVG\AVG8 directory has been removed. Also look in
\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data and see if
the AVG directories have been removed from there as well. (They
may also be in the "All Users" directory.) (Presuming that
you're running XP and not vista.)

Do get a good registry scanner and use it. BEWARE of ANY free
scanners that you may come across on the Web; many are malware
in disguise. The UniBlue site has a free on-line scan available,
but I'm not sure just how much or how many corrections it will
make. There are probably other reputable sites that have on-line
scanners like this as well. Google it carefully.

Best regards,
Marc

I would suggest using a good registry cleaner; one of the best is
RegSupreme, which has a free, fully functional, 30 day trial period.

One of the best features of the program is the default setting to prompt the
user for a backup of the current registry, so if there is any problem with
the corrections made the user can restore the prior registry settings.

Well, feel thankful that you were able to sort of complete the uninstall
of AVG 8. I kept getting errors keeping me from any uninstall operation.
I had to strip all file references to AVG after checking with a search. I
also had to go into regedit and strip out all references to AVG and Grisoft.
Be careful with regedit, not to strip out the wrong programs. I would back
up regedit first, if you feel uncomfortable about doing this. You have to
be signed on as Administrator to erase everything. I could not erase the
'Legacy' references to AVG, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.

Well, no surprise. Removing AVAST was painful. My machine was so loaded
down with their software, I couldn't get Add/Remove Software to kick in. I had
to wait overnight until I finally got a prompt from AVAST to remove their
software.
At least this was done almost completely, except for a few temp files and folders

left behind. As I mentioned earlier, AVG's removal tool had errors and I had to
manually remove it.

I am really nervous now about any virus protection software clogging up my
machine
and bringing it to a crawl. If I get in a masochistic mood, I may try some of
the other
programs suggested. For now, I will take my chances without virus protection,
being
as careful as possible not to open attachments or other suspect material.

Why bother listing such specs? What a waste of time and effort. Why would
they be so dishonest?

A realistic min spec for AVG 8 free edition:

2.5ghz p4 or equivalent
512mb memory

For their 'security suite':

dual core processor
1gb of memory
